We arrived in the afternoon, and Ingjerd had made delicious lasagna for us. Later on we went skiing and had fun sliding on Larsbreen(at the bottom of a glacier). You always have to carry a gun when you leave the town, because of polar bears. They are very dangerous.
There are barracks that the students at the University there(UNIS) live in. This is a picture taken from Ingjers barrack. At the bottom of the hill, you can see Longyearbyen downtown. The students live in Nybyen wich is farther up in the valley.
It was very cold when we got there, and even colder the day after. We were supposed to go skiing up to a top, but it was too cold. One person in our group got a frostbite, so we had to turn around and go back.
We rented snowmobils and we were supposed to go to Barentsburg for a day. It's a 3-4hours drive with snowmobil each way. Barentsburg is a russian mining town. Because of bad weather, and a snowmobile that wouldn't start we had to bring them back. The nice thing was that we got all the money back. So we had a little luck anyway. At least we got to drive around a little bit in Longyearbyen before one of the snowmobile stopped.

When we read about the 3- to 4-hour snowmobile ride Emme said, "Sounds like the canoe trip!". Hate the expressions LOL - but that pretty much sums up what I was thinking after she said that! ;) Love your posts! Thank you so much for taking the time and keeping us all updated!
