I inserted my first IV today...

Intravenous therapy or IV therapy is the giving of liquid substances directly into a vein. The intravenous route is the fastest way to deliver fluids and medications throughout the body.

The simplest form of intravenous access is by passing a hollow needle through the skin directly into the vein. This needle can be connected directly to a syringe (used either to withdraw blood or deliver its contents into the bloodstream) or may be connected to a length of tubing and thence whichever collection or infusion system is desired.
The most convenient site is often the arm, especially the veins on the back of the hand, or the median cubital vein at the elbow, but any identifiable vein can be used. Often it is necessary to use a tourniquet which restricts the venous drainage of the limb and makes the vein bulge. Once the needle is in place, it is common to draw back slightly on the syringe to aspirate blood, thus verifying that the needle is really in a vein. The tourniquet should be removed before injecting to prevent extravasation of the medication. (from wikipedia)

It's was a great experience to try something with needles, and not just study by reading in lots of books. We inserted IVs on each other. It was a little bit hard to find the vein, but when you first got it. The rest wasn't so hard. I thought I was going to be more nervous when one of my friends did it on me. But it really wasn't bad. But then something funny happened. To test and see if the IV was really in the vein, we inserted Sodium Chloride. But when my friend was doing that, she pushed to hard, and suddenly there were Sodium Chloride and blood splashed around us. Luckily we didn't get anything in our eyes or anything. And Im glad I don't have any terrible diseases. So we were laughing and shocked at the same time. But all in all, I thought we did pretty good. And nobody fainted!
